‘Bloomsday & Beyond: Celebrating Ireland, the Island of Writers’

The Irish Embassy in Dakar organized a small event on Tuesday 16 June to celebrate ‘Bloomsday 2026’. While Bloomsday has traditionally focused on James Joyce and his seminal novel ‘Ulysses’ the focus for this event is the celebration of all Irish writers past and present: ‘Bloomsday & Beyond: Celebrating Ireland, the Island of Writers’.
 
The day was marked with a donation of Irish books to the book-lending club at Chez Alpha Books, the English-language bookstore in Ouakam. There was a short handing-over ceremony with a couple of readings from works of Irish literature.
 
Students from the University Cheikh Anta Diop, staff and members of the book club at Chez Alpha Books along with representatives from the Irish Embassy all joined in to share readings.

Connections and friendships were made throughout the afternoon. Chez Alpha Books greatly appreciates this collaboration with the Irish Embassy.
