New in the Lending Library for Young Readers - Read with us!

Inspired by the many Indigenous-led movements across North America, We Are Water Protectors issues an urgent rallying cry to safeguard the Earth's water from harm and corruption--a bold and lyrical picture book written by Carole Lindstrom and vibrantly illustrated by Michaela Goade.
Two great-grandchildren ask their grandmother 15 questions about the man they remember as Grandad, and the world remembers as Nelson Mandela, the global icon of peace and forgiveness who spent 27 years in prison. They learn that he was a freedom fighter who put down his weapons for the sake of peace, and who then became the President of South Africa and a Nobel Peace Prize-winner, and realise that they can continue his legacy in the world today.
The 1619 Project’s lyrical picture book in verse chronicles the consequences of slavery and the history of Black resistance in the United States, thoughtfully rendered by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones and Newbery honor-winning author Renée Watson.

New Arrivals in Lending Library

When a black teenager prays to be white and her wish comes true, her journey of self-discovery takes shocking--and often hilarious--twists and turns in this debut that people are sure to talk about.

LaToya Williams lives in Birmingham, Alabama, and attends a mostly white high school. She's so low on the social ladder that even the other black kids disrespect her. Only her older brother, Alex, believes in her. At least, until a higher power answers her only prayer--to be "anything but black." And voila! She wakes up with blond hair, blue eyes, and lily white skin. And then the real fun begins . . .

Six days a week, twenty-eight-year-old Ella May Wiggins works at American Mill No. 2 in Bessemer City, North Carolina.
When the union leaflets begin circulating, Ella May has a taste of hope, a yearning for the better life the organizers promise. On the night of the county’s biggest rally, Ella May, weighing the costs of her choice, makes up her mind to join the movement-a decision that will have lasting consequences for her children, her friends, her town-indeed all that she loves.
Years later, Ella May’s daughter Lilly, tells her nephew about his grandmother and the events that transformed their family revealing for the first time, the tragedy that befell Ella May after that fateful union meeting in 1929.

Reading is Fundamental

"The true university of these days is a collection of books". Thomas Carlyle
Some may ask, “Why read a book?”  In response, books allow us to travel without leaving the house; we can slip them in our bags and crack them open as we wait for the bus or read quietly while enjoying the last glass of attaya. Books connect us to the diversity in the world around us, exposing us to new ideas and experiences. Compared to the cost of a college course, one book is relatively inexpensive and our library loan program allows books to circulate
throughout the community.

Originally established solely as a new bookstore the lending library was organized later to provide the community much needed access to a wide range of books in English.  Consisting of almost 2000 fiction and non-fiction books for readers of all ages, the lending library  members  include individual students, families and Chez Alpha also works collaboratively with various educational institutions providing them access to English books.  Students utilize the library in order to complete required assignments while other readers drop by for a quick visit, become hooked and continue to stop by for a monthly supply of good reading materials.  Some library members travel great distances for the pleasure of borrowing books. Other visitors are merely in Dakar for a two week vacation and having heard about Chez Alpha feel the need to come and read just for the afternoon.  Whatever your reason for visiting the library, we share your addiction to books and welcome passionate readers from around the world!
